At some point during the interviewing process, you will be asked to specify the financial compensation you are expecting to take a position with a potential new employer. Unaware of the potential consequences, many candidates give a specific dollar amount. You may just have inadvertently priced yourself out of a job you really wanted or unknowingly reduced the salary offer you will receive. Try your best not to get into detailed specific discussions about the compensation package you require until late in the interviewing process after you have a chance to fully evaluate the opportunity and the employer can fully evaluate you. Here are some suggestions in dealing with the money question.
- Present your complete current compensation package to the prospective employer early in the interviewing process. Be sure to include any bonus plans, stock options and any other form of financial compensation. (Be sure to present accurate information since many employers will request documentation.) Also, if you are expecting a salary review in the near future, let them know that as well.
- Convey to the interviewer that if you were the candidate selected for the position, you would expect a motivating offer based on your present compensation package and the skills that you would bring to the company.
- Remember, money is just one of many factors involved in determining if a new job opportunity is right for you. Recognize what those other factors are (quality of life, professional growth and challenges, geographics, etc.) and assign a value to each. Keep these in mind when you finally do specify to the perspective employer the financial compensation package you require.
Salary negotiation can be one of the more stressful parts of obtaining a new job. By using the above suggestions, you can minimize the stress while being more assured that you are receiving a fair financial compensation offer from this prospective employer. |
