The New Resume
What You Need to Know Before Posting a Resume Online
How to Handle the Money Question

The basic resume has not changed much over the years. It typically consists of sections for Career Objective, Education, Employment History, and perhaps Publications, Associations and Awards. This ubiquitous career document is finally receiving a much needed makeover.

Chronology and wordy explanations of job duties are out. Skills and Abilities are in. Especially in the high technology fields, including biotechnology, it is of utmost importance to convey clearly what skills you can bring to a potential employer in your resume. It can also be useful to differentiate between skills you are proficient in and skills you have been merely exposed to.
An example of the Skills and Abilities section for a biotechnology research professional could read as follows:

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Proficient in HPLC, LC/MS, GC/MS, LC-NMR, Protein Purification and Characterization, Drug Metabolism Studies, NMR, GLP Requirements.

Familiar with in vivo drug metabolism studies, pharmacokinetics, use of radioisotopes.

A clear accounting of your Skills and Abilities in your resume will get you noticed.
